SARTrack App privacy policy
This policy covers the SARTrack Android App (package nz.sartrack.app), made by SARTrack Limited,
New Zealand.
Who the App is for
The SARTrack App is part of the SARTrack software for Search and Rescue and Emergency Management organisations. It only works with a login that your organisation has set up for you on its SARTrack Database Server. It is not meant for the general public, and not for children.
The short version
- The App sends data only to your own organisation's SARTrack Server, over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection.
- Your location is sent only while you have switched on Send my position and you have joined an active Operation.
- There are no advertisements, no analytics and no tracking by third parties.
- SARTrack Limited never sells or shares your data.
What the App collects, and why
- Location. This is only sent while Send my position is switched on and you have joined an active
Operation. It includes your position, height, speed, direction and accuracy. Your organisation uses it to see
where its Teams are during an Operation. While position sending is on, it also works when the App is in the
background or the screen is off, so your Team can still be seen. Android then shows a notification
("SARTrack tracking on"). You can switch it off at any time on the You tab. With no active Operation, the App sends
no location at all.
When you send a Clue, the App also uses your location to place the Clue on the map. - Your login and callsign. These are needed to log in to your organisation's Server. They show who sent a position, message or Log entry.
- What you send yourself. This covers the messages, Log entries and Clues you write, any photo you take or choose for a Clue, and your status and availability. These go to your organisation's Server, where your organisation's people can see them.
- Device information. At login, the App sends the phone's make and model and the App version. This helps your organisation and SARTrack support with problems.
- The App's own log. The App keeps a diagnostic log on the phone. It is only sent when you choose Send my log to the Server on the You tab, and only to your organisation's Server.
The App does not read your contacts, calls, SMS messages, other files or other Apps. It only uses the camera or your photos when you choose to add a photo to a Clue.
Where your data goes
All data goes only to your organisation's SARTrack Database Server. This is either your organisation's own computer, or an Internet Server that SARTrack Limited runs for your organisation. Every connection is encrypted. Your organisation decides who in the organisation can see the data, and how long it keeps it.
SARTrack Limited does not use your data for any other purpose. It does not sell it, and does not share it with third parties. The only exception is where New Zealand law requires it.
Data on your phone
To work without a connection, the App keeps the last data of your Operation on the phone. This includes the map, the Log, the messages and the Tasks, plus anything still waiting to be sent. This data is deleted when the Operation closes. Uninstalling the App removes everything it stored on the phone.
The permissions the App asks for
- Location (also in the background): to send your position, as described above.
- Notifications: for new messages, Tasks and Log entries, and to show when the App is connected or sending your position.
- Run in the background, start at phone start-up and no battery restrictions: so that messages and your position still work with the screen off.
- Network and WiFi: to connect to the Internet Server, or to find your organisation's local Server on the WiFi.
Your choices and rights
- Switch off Send my position, leave the Operation, or log out at any time. You can also take away the App's location permission in Android's settings.
- To see, correct or delete the data held about you, please ask your organisation, as it manages its own Server. You can also contact SARTrack Limited, and we will help.
- Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to ask for access to your personal information, and to ask for it to be corrected.
Google Play
If you installed the App from Google Play, Google collects some data itself. See Google's privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy.
